Sorry but „The Lancia grille never really fittted“

Paolo Martin November 2013 berichtet in “Classic & Sports Car”: „The Lancia Monte-Carlo did see the light of day, although it started in 1969 as the 128-based front-engine, front drive Fiat X1/20 – youth sport! Then there was an order for the car to be mid-engined, then over a weekend it changed from Fiat to Lancia after a hasty management meeting. The Lancia grille never really fitted.“

Paolo Martin war bei Pininfarina verantwortlich für das Fiat 130 Coupe, NSU Ro80, Rolls Royce Camargue,… Aus Classic & Sports Car über den Camargue: „The biggest problem with the Camargue was the data, which was imperial not metric. We used many of the same proportions as the 130, they just wanted a coupe with an Italian line.“.

Lanciamontecarlo.net: „The car was supposed to be launched at the 1974 Turin motor show, however due to unforeseen delays it was launched at the 1975 Geneva show instead. The first public appearance was at the 1974 Giro d’Italia Automobilistico (Tour of Italy). Not actually a Montecarlo, but was a prototype built on a modified X1/20 chassis, with a heavily modified body.

Only the windscreen and windows were the same as the Montecarlo, the body had a big snorkel on the (rear) bonnet, and was named Abarth 030 Pininfarina. The engine was a Fiat 130 based V6 3-litre 285hp. Fiat did the same the next year racing the Abarth 031, using the same engine which was a prefiguration of the Fiat 131 Abarth. This car, driven by Giorgio Pianta and Christine Becker Nr.527, came 2nd behind the Lancia Stratos Turbo Nr.526 driven by Andruet/“Biche“.

Paolo Martin zeichnete die Front zu 99% für das geplante Fiat Emblem: “Just before the Geneva motor show they decided to introduce it as a Lancia, to recall a rallying tradition. The car was named Montecarlo (the rally, its obvious) but with a Beta badge to link it to a mass-production car. That’s why the car on the Pininfarina stand at the Geneva motor show had Lancia badges but was still named X1/20. Anyway, the Monte raced very few rallies and the Fiat group mass-production car for the Rally World Championship was the 131.”.

Pininfarina: „Many designers are just good Illustrators. In the 60’s only Michelotti really designed cars himself; maybe Giugiaro was the first true all-rounder. Battista Pininfarina was good with a hammer but I’m not sure he could even write. The thing I’m proud of is that I was able to make these models – all the ones here are originals, made of wood – so everything I have done I have really thought about, designed and built.“

Als wahres Turbomonster und echter „Porschekiller“ in mehreren Ausbaustufen machte der MC Turbo in der Tourenwagen Weltmeisterschaft mit zwei Weltmeistertiteln von sich reden.
